Introduction

PanchaKarma is the word for the five diverse measures which is used in Ayurveda and believed to sanitise the body. Panchakarma therapies confirm to be highly valuable in abolishing ama (toxins) caused during metabolic procedure and also contaminations accured in the body.

The PanchaKarmas (five therapies) are as follows:

Vaman: Medicated induced vomiting
Virechan: Medicated induced purgation
Niroha Basti: Decoction Enema
Anuvasan Basti: Oil Enema
Nasya: Errhine Therapy

Panchakarma includes three steps as follows:

1. Purva Karma (Preparatory Procedures): Sneha and Svedan
2. Pradhan Karma: Main Therapy
3. Paschat Karma: Post Procedural Regiment

If done properly PanchaKarma holds potency of treating all the diseases (Chronic and Acute in nature) by removing the toxins out of the body and maitaining the harmony of doshas.

VAMAN
  • It is a specialized procedure   wherein the biogenic toxins from the body are expelled out via the oral route.
  • FAVOURABLE SEASON: - for health promotion is spring (pre summer).

INDICATIONS
  • Thyroid diseases, 
  • Hyperacidity e.t.c.
  • Skin diseases (Psoriasis, Eczema, Pimples e.t.c.)
  • Bronchial Asthma, 
  • Sinusitis, Allergic diseases,
  • Obesity,
  • Increased cholesterol levels
SCHEDULE:
Pre procedural regimen:
  • Oral intake of medicated ghee for 3 -7 days.
  • Body massage and steam as directed by physician.
  • Followed by one day rest.

Main procedure

  • Emetic medicines are given along with milk.
  • 4 – 8 Good bouts of vomiting are expected.
  • Duration of procedure last for an average of 45 mins.
  • A day hospital admission is preffered.

Post procedural regimen

  • Dietery regimen is advised for 3 – 7 days.
Total  days: 8 – 16 
 
   
VIRECHANA (Induced Medicated purgation)
  • It is a specialized procedure wherein the biogenic toxins from the body are expelled out via the anal route.

FAVOURABLE SEASON:  for health promotion is Autumn.

INDICATIONS:

  • Jaundice                           
  • Anemia
  • Skin diseases (Psoriasis, Eczema, Vitiligo, Allergy e.t.c.)
  • Ascitis
  • Worm infestation
  • Paralysis
  • Kidney disorders
  • Gall stones 
  • Bronchial Asthma
  • Vascular diseases e.t.c.
SCHEDULE:
Pre procedural regimen
  • Medicated ghee orally 3 -7 days.
  • Body massage and steam as directed by physician.
  • Followed by two day rest.
Main procedure
  • Purgative medicines are given along with decoction.
  • 10 - 30 good bouts of purgation are expected.
  • Duration of procedure last for an average of 4hrs.
  • A day hospital admission is preferred.
  • Post procedural regimen

BASTI (Medicated enema)
  • It is a specialized procedure wherein Decoction/Oil/Ghee e.t.c. is administered through the anal/urethral/Vaginal routes.

SCHEDULE:  The Basti sittings vary according to the patient and      disease. It can be given at hospital / O.P.D. level.
 
   
NASYA (Nasal administration of medicines)
  • A specialized procedure wherein medicated decoction,oil e.t.c are administered  through nasal route.

FOVOURABLE SEASON: All seasons except in cloudy weather.

  • Intellact and Memory loss

SCHEDULE: It is given once a day (15 mins) for 7 consecutive days or as directed by physician.

 

   
RAKTAMOKSHAN (Blood letting)

  • Eye disease
  • Gout
  • Haematoma
  • Varicose vein
  • Piles
  • Epilepsy 
  • Sciatica
  • Hepatomegaly
  • Spleenomegaly
  • Inflammatory joint diseases
   
UPAKARMA’S
Abhyanga (Synchronized massage)
A specialized procedure wherein herbal oils are massaged over the body in a synchronized manner. The therapy is carried out in a closed room on a dhara pati (wooden massage table) by two massures. Abhyanga influences the bodily circulation thus regulating blood and lymphatic flow. It also normalizes neurohormonal axis. This treatment is indicated in psychological diseases eg. Anxiety, convulsions, loss of sleep etc. and somatic diseases like muscle atrophy, polio, joint problems, paralysis, etc. this treatment is done for 45 min. daily for 7 consecutive days.
 
Pizhichil (Taila dhara)
As the word suggest warm medicated oil is poured systematically over the body and massaged simultaneously. It is very useful treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, neurological disorders, Blockages in blood vessels, Parkinsonism etc.
 
Navarkizhi
This procedure is highly rejuvenating, nourishing and prepares the individual to bear the stress and strains of busy lifestyle. In this procedure a special type of rice is cooked with milk and herbs. This rice is then tied in boluses and massaged rhythmically all over the body. This strengthening massage is employed in malnutrition disorders, joint disorders, nervous system disorders and for promoting longevity.
 
Patrapindasweda (Elakizhi)
This therapy begins with application of herbal oil to the entire body. This is then followed by generalized massage with boluses containing fried medicinal leaves, lemon and grated coconut. This therapy is mainly effective in inflammatory joint conditions, sports injury like ligament tear, spondylosis etc. 
 
Shirodhara 
Procedure wherein luke warm herbal oil is poured rhythmically on to the forehead with simultaneous massage over the head. This therapy relieves stress related problems, slows the aging process, improves memory and known to have curative effect in hypertension, psychological disorders and sleep disorders. It is also used in most of the diseases of head.
 
Bahyabasti
Procedure of retaining warm medicated oil/ghee over body parts.
 
1. Netrabasti 
Retaining medicated Ghee over ocular region. Indicated in eye diseases.  
 
2. Manya Basti
Indicated in cervical spondylosis.
 
3. Hrud Basti
Indicated in certain cardiac diseases.
 
4. Kati basti 
Indicated in lumbar spondylosis and bladder diseases.
 
5. Janu Basti
Indicated in Osteoarthritis of knee joint.
 
6. Prishtha Basti
 Indicated in diseases occurring in thoracic region.
